Background:All countries worldwide strive to provide optimal growth and development conditions for infants and young children. Concerning infants up to two years of age, they learn about their surrounding environments via their senses such as their senses of sight, hearing, and touch. Studies have shown that by massaging infants, it can activate their vagus nerves and ensure their healthy mental and physical growth. This study investigated the effects of massaging healthy infants on their body weights, heights, head circumferences, chest circumferences, food intake, and excretion. Methods:This study used 30 healthy infants aged 0–18 months old as the study participants and divided them evenly into an experimental and control group. Parents of the infants in the experimental group attended a 1-hour-long massage class that took place once a week for 4 consecutive weeks. During the study, said parents massaged their children daily. By contrast, parents of the infants in the control group did not attend the massage class and/or massage their children. Parents of both the experimental group and control group filled out a questionnaire and physiological status table before the massage class on Week 1 and after the massage class on Week 4, which were subsequently analyzed to identify whether massaging infants had an effect on their physiological conditions. Results:After introducing the massage class as an intervention measure, infants who had been massaged ate significantly more baby foods daily on average than those who had not been massaged (p = 0.023). However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in bodyweight, height, head circumference, chest circumference, amount of breastmilk and/or infant formula consumed per day, average number of urinations per day, and average number of defecation per day. Conclusions:Infant massage can increase the food intake. This method of child care is inexpensive, invaluable, and loving. Thus, infants’ primary caregivers in homes and baby care centers are encouraged to massage infants to elevate their eating skills, which is conducive to their healthy mental and physical development.
