Abstract Robert Alexander Schumann (1810-1856), a German composer and music critic of the Romantic era, had created many of his music ideas strongly influenced by literatures. His father was a bookseller and publisher. Therefore, Schumann’s interest in literatures and music was cultivated from an early age. Later in many of his music compositions, he had also integrated many ideas from literature into his music. This thesis focuses especially on the analysis and performance interpretation of Schumann’s Humoreske, Op. 20. It consists of four chapters: chapter one begins with my research motivation and purpose, as well as the methodology and scope of the study; chapter two is an overview of Schumann’s life and the historical background of Schumann’s Humoreske; chapter three is the compositional analysis and interpretation of Schumann’s Humoreske; chapter four is the conclusion of this study.
