Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the greatest musicians in the history of western music, and is regarded as a maestro. Although he experienced many hardships in his life, his unyielding determination turned all the anguish into an ample volume of master works, including symphonies, orchestral works, concertos, piano works and chamber music. Among these works, the thirty- two piano sonatas have remained extremely important in the history of piano music. This dissertation focuses on Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in D major, Op. 28. through an analysis and performance interpretation. There are six chapters. The first chapter expounds the motive, scope and method of this study. The second chapter summarizes Beethoven’s life and music style. The third chapter explains pastoral style and introduces Beethoven’s pastoral works. The fourth chapter includes an analysis of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in D major, Op. 28. The fifth chapter presents the performance interpretation of the specific work. The final chapter is the conclusion which summarizes the previous chapters by a brief discussion.
