Due to accelerating urbanization in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, urban habitats are rapidly becoming the major lowland habitats in the region. As urban habitats are expanding at the expense of natural habitat, urban ecosystems are becoming increasingly important in providing refuge to the remaining native species. Many studies showed that urban parks are biodiversity hotspots in urban ecosystems. Birds are the most conspicuous and probably the most appreciated element of urban wildlife. The urban bird communities may also play a role in enhancing recreational value of the urban parks and the quality of life for the urban residents. The present study investigates the bird community of an urban park. Kowloon Park (KP) is one of the most heavily-used urban parks in Hong Kong. The park with a size of 13.3 ha is situated at the heart of the city. The bird communities of KP were studied by transect counts twice a month since March 2014 for 12 months. Breeding bird communities were studied by the territory mapping method during the avian breeding season. Seasonal changes of the park bird community were found in this study. Summer visitors, winter visitors and passage migrants were recorded. Proven or probable avian breeders in the park were identified. Feeding guilds of birds observed include granivore, omnivore, scavenger, carnivore, insectivore, insectivore-frugivore and insectivore-frugivore-nectarivore. Given its small size, KP has a diverse bird community with different guilds being found, such as woodland species and water-dependent species. The potential of the urban park bird communities as an ecotourism resource for park visitors will be discussed.

Tourism and architecture appear to be separate disciplines with parallel trajectories. Ecotourism, recognized as the conscience of sustainable tourism, has evolved for more than two decades since its emergence. Successful development of ecotourism and sustainable tourism share some principles. These principles parallel the growth in environmentally friendly consumerism that has extended from products to destination. The art and science of architecture is also following this trend for it too is framed within the larger discussion of sustainability. Logically, then, ecotourism and sustainable architectural design form a natural partnership. This paper brings out the interrelationship between eco- and sustainable tourism, green place movement, and the green elements in the architectural study. Through a review of some contemporary literature and examples of ecolodge, biomimetics or biomimicry, liveable city and green city marketing, the paper argues that architects and resource planners should take the idea of sustainable architecture as the core principle for future construction and development. A sustainability conceptualization and a system approach to integrate elements in a living environment are both the two keys to success. Sustainable architecture lays down foundation for further in-depth discussions and establishes a bridge for studies about sustainability movements in ecotourism and architecture.

The paper aim to discuss the role of the identity of a small local town in Thailand, Chiang Saen, known as one of the most famous historical site in northern Thailand. The debate and discussion of town's identity is important because the identity of a place is symbolic: it represents the place's value, characteristics and a story of its past. The identity of a community is in turn symbolic of a place's future, the local peoples' perceptions of their environment and their activities within it. The paper will also discuss how residents perceive the current identity of the town and whether they want the town to develop in the future. It will also examine how some residents have used the town's identity to justify protesting against changes that they perceive as inappropriate for their community and will reflects to the sustainability of their community.
