Background and purpose: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are the most common fracture caused by osteoporosis. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and kyphoplasty (PKP) are effective surgical interventions for reducing back pain, restoring body height, and improving quality of life. However, VCFs with nonosteoporotic etiologies, including unexpected malignancy, are sometimes difficult to distinguish preoperatively. This study investigated the incidence of unexpected malignancy in presumed osteoporotic VCFs undergoing PVP or PKP. Methods: A total of 127 patients with presumed osteoporotic VCFs undergoing PVP or PKP from December 2010 to August 2017 were retrospectively enrolled. Demographics, surgical method, magnetic resonance images, pathological report were collected. The incidence of unexpected malignancy in biopsy results was calculated. Results: A total of 161 vertebral biopsies from 127 patients undergoing 37 PVPs and 96 PKPs were examined. From these, two multiple myelomas and one metastatic liposarcoma were revealed through pathological examination. The incidence of unexpected malignancy was 2.4% (3/127). Conclusion: A biopsy is advisable during PVP and PKP in cases of presumed osteoporotic VCFs to exclude nonosteoporotic etiologies, specifically malignancy.

Background and purpose: Salidroside, extracted from Rhodiola rosea, has been reported to possess anti-tumor effect. However, the therapeutic effects of Salidroside on bladder cancer have not been investigated. This study focused on the effects and possible mechanisms of Salidroside on human bladder cancer in vitro. Methods: The human bladder cancer cell line, T24, was incubated with various concentrations of Salidroside (12.5, 25 and 50 ug/ mL) for 24 hours, followed by serial biological examinations. Cell viability, proliferation and toxicity were accessed by MTT, trypan blue exclusion assay and LDH assay. Cell migration was accessed by wound healing assay. ELISA, western blot and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the expression of TGF β1/smad signaling related proteins and epithelial- mesenchymal transition (EMT). Results: Salidroside treatment of T24 cells significantly inhibited cell proliferation and cell migration. In addition, Salidroside significantly reduced the expression of TGF-β1 and downstream signaling in T24 cells. TGF-β1 downstream signal regulators Smad 2/3 was reduced, while the inhibitor Smad 7 was increased. Further investigating the EMT markers was performd, which showed that Salidroside decreased EMT through decreasing the expression of α-SMA and increasing expression of E-cadherin. Conclusion: In the present study, Salidroside was found to show anticancer effects on bladder cancer T24 cells. These effects were demonstrated by suppressing cell proliferation, tumor invasion and EMT. The underlying mechanisms may be associated with modulating EMT process by down-regulating TGF β1/Smad pathway.

Iatrogenic acute aortic regurgitation is a rare complication but can occur during cardiac surgery performed in the vicinity of aortic valve. The vulnerability of aortic valve is ascribed to its central location of the cardiac fibrous skeleton. Here we present a case of iatrogenic severe aortic regurgitation during mitral valve replacement because of non-coronary cusp prolapse caused by the traction of a pledgeted suture of mitral valve prosthesis. After prompt correction, transesophageal echocardiography revealed mild aortic regurgitation.

An overbite is the overlap of the top teeth over the bottom teeth. A deep overbite can cause problems such as excessive wear, pain and aesthetic concerns. This case reports a 24-year-old male complaining of malalignment of the anterior teeth. The orthodontic evaluation revealed that the overjet was up to 7 mm and overbite was attained at 8 mm. The treatment plans include applying full mouth fixed appliance, reducing deep overbite, correcting the two lingualized mandibular premolars, and establishing an anterior vertical stop. The whole treatment took about 3 years to complete. The maxillary and mandibular arches were aligned very well. Adequate overbite and overjet were achieved while maintaining the Class I molar and canine relationships. Diagnosis and treatment of excessive vertical overlap at an early age can reduce the prevalence of traumatic tooth and adjacent periodontal tissues. Methods of treatment should be evaluated with care.

Malignant glaucoma is one of the most serious complications of intraocular surgery, which in the natural course results in loss of vision in a short peroid of time. Closure of the drainage angle at the time of surgery and axial hypermetropia is related to increased risks. Despite established common risk factors, malignant glaucoma continues to present a rare condition with challenging management, which might perhaps be the fact that the exact mechanism behind its etiology is not yet understood. Diagnosis may be delayed right at the beginning, resulting in a delay in administering optimal medical therapy. Response to medical therapy may not be significant in many eyes and surgical management remains difficult and controversial. Through this case we reported, some of the important features and problems that may be encountered during the management of malignant glaucoma will be shown. We performed pars plana vitrectomy, phacoemulsification and secondarily intraocular lens implantation, without a patent communication between the posterior and the anterior chambers. In the light of modern microsurgical techniques, reversal of malignant glaucoma can be attained with preservation of good visual acuity and intraocular pressure (IOP) control.

Most hormone levels are measured using immunoassays that utilize animal-based reagent antibodies to identify the analytes of interest. With advances in immunoassay technology, modern instruments are required to minimize potential interference and ensure accuracy. Exaggerated analytical errors are currently uncommon. Herein, we report a 61-year-old woman with an elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone level (> 100 uIU/mL) in her health checkup report. Unexpectedly, other hormones were also high, including prolactin, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol. Considerably different results were obtained in alternative analysis platforms. Further investigation revealed that the patient had a high level of rheumatoid factor. Patient sample was pretreated with heterophilic blocking tube, the rheumatoid factor level was significantly reduced, and hormone levels were close to normal on the original analytical platform. We believe the false high results of multiple hormones caused by rheumatoid factor-related interference.
