Widespread exogenous endocrine disruptors in the environment are becoming a major growing concern in the field of ecology and environmental protection recently. The objective of this review article is to elucidate the effects of fish reproduction caused by exogenous endocrine disruptors. First, fish reproductive biology will be discussed at different reproductive stages to help understand the possible mechanisms which exogenous endocrine disruptors alter fish reproduction. Second, by incorporating the concept of ”Stress-Exposure-Effect model”, possible effects of exogenous endocrine disruptors can be analyzed in the following three steps: the status of exogenous endocrine disruptors in surroundings, the processes of these chemicals entering the body of fish, and the effects on fish reproduction. Finally, we apply the ”Hierarchy theory” approach to organize all effects causing by exogenous endocrine disruptors from different biological organization levels on fish reproduction. Furthermore, we propose a tentative framework by combining with these three perspectives based on published studies on this subject. From available data, it indicates that fish exposed to exogenous endocrine disruptors worldwide. However, we are still not able to predict the potential ecological outcomes from the disruption of fish reproduction causing by these chemicals. In summary, it will be helpful to make a better prediction on ecological effects of exogenous endocrine disruptors by developing a suite of appropriate biological responses across different biological organization levels by applying an integration of both chemical and biological indicators approaches.
