Ultrasonic evaluation of liver volume is a simple, safe and accurate method. Eighty-four Chinese adults (male=46) were subjected for grayscale static scanning of liver with measurement of liver volume and diameters. The mean ± standard deviation of normal liver volume measured by planimetry was 934.25 ± 154.17 cm^3 which was smaller when compared with western literatures. It was probable due to different races and imaging modalities. The AP diameter of the right (RD) and left (LD) lobe liver was 10.74 ± 2.41 cm and 5.28 ± 1.79 cm respectively. These two diameters are correlated well with liver volume (p<0.01). Liver volume has good correlation with body habitus and statistically significant between male and female (p<0.05). But, in this adult group (19-49 years), it is not related with age. During scanning, the visualization of lower liver margin, pancreas and kidney were affected by body weight.
