The general impression of the Chinese nation is that it is a cultural entity. In this paper, I argue that common cultural traits or any imagined shared origins are no more than indicators of a deeper imagination of shared blood. I discuss the familiar arguments about cultural Chinese nation and their limitations. I then use my interviews with local Buyi cadres and villagers in Huishui County, Guizhou, to illustrate how blood-related imagination is behind all this cultural rhetoric.
