Background: Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical image enhancement technology for endoscopy. The NBI system is useful for detecting superficial small vessels in esophagus. Aims: We studied the role of the NBI system in the detection of esophageal varices (EVs) on the surface layer of esophagus. Materials and methods: We retrospectively studied 30 patients with documented cirrhosis and 10 controls. All patients underwent NBI imaging immediately following conventional upper endoscopies. EV's endoscopic features including the size, location, color, red color sign, and esophagitis were recorded. Two experienced endoscopists concomitantly evaluated the image quality of the visualization of each EV as 0-4+. Results: The NBI system detected more EVs (30 vs. 26) than the conventional upper endoscopy system. For the quality of images, fifty percent of conventional upper endoscopy and 87% of NBI system had score ≧ 3 (P<0.001). Conclusion: The NBI system generates better image quality for the visualization of EVs than the conventional upper endoscopy system. The NBI system is more useful for identifying small EVs than a conventional upper endoscopy system.
