This article is to discuss the meanings of response” (Ying) in Guo Xiang's philosophy and conclude that the sage king's capability in ”external and internal harmony” is closely related to his ability in response. In Guo's philosophy, ”response” has internal and external meanings, while the former refers to the sage's spiritual state and capacity, and the latter refers to the sage's interaction and dealings with people. The internal meaning of ”response” explicates the sage's enjoyment without dependence, while the external meaning of ”response” explains how the sage could make people as carefree as he is ”without losing their dependence.”
