Comparison of Students' Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness in a Medical College

The evaluation of teaching effectiveness is part of an on-going program to improve the quality of education at National Taiwan University College of Medicine. In this study, a quantitative assessment of student's opinion on the performance of course instructors of large-sized classes was made using a questionnaire survey. Each instructor was evaluated in terms of the following four dimensions: (1) teaching attitude; (2) course content; (3) teaching methods; and (4) the student's overall assessment of the instructor. Measurements were made on a five-point Likert scale ranging from highly satisfied to extremely dissatisfied. The sum of satisfied and highly satisfied comments on the student's overall assessment of the instructor was devided by total comments and the ratio was termed the positive rating of the instructor (PRI). Such ratio derived from the data of all the instructors in each course was termed the positive rating of the course (PRC). Three hundred and sixty three instructors of 127 courses were evaluated in the 1997academic year. The overall questionnaire return rate was 48%, with 38% for medical courses and 80% for paramedical courses respectively. The average number of instructors for each course was 8.0 and 3.9 for medical and paramedical courses respectively. Most of the basic medical courses were evaluated based on data from medical students only. Statistical analysis of PRI data found that 42% of the instructors were favorably rated by 80% of the student population and 12% of the instructors were favorably rated by less than 60% of student population. Analysis of PRC data found that78 courses (61%) were favorably rated by 80% of the student population and 10 courses (8%) were favorably rated by less than 60% of the student population. The ranking of the departments in which PRC was assessed was in the following order: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nurse, Medicine and Pharmacy. (Full Text in Chinese)
