An Illustration of the Development of Veterinary Forensic Pathology Based on Retrospective Case Studies

More and more law-related issues may involve animals, and thus the role of veterinarians in forensic science is increasingly gaining importance. Veterinary forensic pathology is a subject through a necropsy to decide the ”cause of death (COD)” and ”mechanism of death (MOD)”. In this retrospective study, from the 119 cases submitted to NTUVH in past 12 years, 10 cases were selected for determining the COD and the MOD, and for further analysis of the possible issues involved in the development of veterinary forensic pathology. Among these 10 cases, 8 cases having specific forensic purposes for necropsy were classified as ”investigation for medical liability”. There were some defects in existing problems for specimen sampling/preservation, labeling, and recording, which were not suitable for the forensic pathology. All of these were the challenges for the development of veterinary forensic medicine.
