The purpose of this article is to provide nurses who care for dialysis patients with information on how to accurately estimate dry weight for hemodialysis patients. There is a need to continually monitor and accurately assess the dry weight of hemodialysis patients, since over hydration can lead to cardiovascular complications. Nurses also need to know the reasons for increases in patients’ dry weight so they can provide effective education for patients to assist them to control their body weight, including weight gain due to retaining water, between dialysis treatments. These strategies can be used to avoid cardiovascular complications and increase the quality of patient care.
