Taiwan's people seek to find unity in the context of confused identity. Since the nation's takeover by forces under the Kuomintang in 1946, various bases for identity have been proposed by politicians and pundits for decades. A short story written in the 1960's by Hwang Ch'un-ming offers a situation and character, Major Lu, whose choices offer a way through the conundrum. Laying this story alongside biblical narratives of foreign military forces resident in the Holy Land at the time of Jesus, a paradigm for common identity among Christians and a role for Christians in moving Taiwan towards unity is suggested.
