Effects of the Addition of Alloys on the Properties of the Cast Ti-15Mo Alloy

Titanium and titanium alloys have become two of the most attractive implant materials due to their light weight, high biocorrosion resistance, biocompatibility and mechanical properties, including a low modulus. Although Ti-6Al-4V is popularly used as an implant material, its suspected effects on Al and the cytotoxicity of vanadium have recently been discussed. Concern has also been raised about the stress-shielding phenomenon observed especially in cementless hip and knee prostheses, which can potentially lead to bone resorption and eventual failure of the arthroplasty. In our recent study, a β phase Ti-15Mo alloy was developed for biomedical applications. This alloy exhibits a lower modulus than those of 316L, Co-Cr-Mo and Ti-6Al-4V alloys used as medical implants; however, the strength of the Ti-15Mo alloy is lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V. The present work is a study of the effects of the addition of 1 wt% of a series of alloying elements (Nb, Zr, Cr and Fe) on the structure and properties of a Ti-15Mo system. One major purpose of this research is to improve the strength, yet maintain the low modulus, of the Ti-15Mo alloy by the addition of a small amount of a variety of alloying elements.
