Impact of Political Party Financing on Integrity of 2015 General Election in Nigeria

The 2015 General Election in Nigeria has been widely acclaimed as credible by many scholars because of changes in the conduct and outcome of the election. However, one aspect is totally neglected when it comes to the issue of credibility which is the unprecedented use of excessive money in the political party financing process and its impacts on the outcome of the election. The problem is the regulations on political party financing was violated with huge campaign spending which according to this study affect the integrity and credibility of the 2015 General Election. The research examined how the process of political party financing in Nigeria during the 2015 General Election affects the election and its outcome. The methodology used in this research is qualitative case study where primary and secondary data were collected. The primary data consist of personal interview conducted with some selected informants in six different categories of stakeholders that are related with election conduct in Nigeria and monitoring of illicit financial transactions and the use of primary governmental documents such as 1999 Nigerian Constitution, Electoral Act 2010 and reports from international agencies. The secondary source is the use of existing literature from books, journals, seminars and internet sources. The data obtained was analysed using content analysis with thematic analytic interpretations of the data collected. The research discovered that, while the 2015 General Election recorded improvement in comparison with the previous elections in Nigeria's Fourth Republic, it is still not as credible as presented by previous researchers when the excessive use of money and violation of election's regulations are concerned. Thus, the research recommends that there is need to look into the aspect of political party financing in future elections with a serious determination to foster transparency and more credible elections.
