Ionic liquids are better catalysts than corrosive homogeneous acids because of their high acidity and reuse. Owing to their thermal stability, reuse, and safty, ionic liquids can be applied in many organic chemistry as green catalysts. Tunable aryl imidazolium recyclable ionic liquids were found to be catalysts for Friedel-Crafts reaction, thioesterification, per-O-acetylation and reductive O-4 ring opening of benzylidene acetals. These reactions can form C-C, C-S, C-O and C-H bonds with a high atomeconomy. Ionic liquids exhibited high activity and catalyzed essential reactions with good yields while retaining their catalytic activities for recycling.
