Isomalto-Oligosaccharides Improve Constipation in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients-A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

摘要

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation is a common complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. This study aims to evaluate the effects of oral isomalto-oligosaccharides (IMO) on chronic constipation in PD patients. METHODS: Fifty-six PD patients treated with laxatives were randomized to receive oral 90% isomalto-oligosaccharides (IMO 90) or placebo for 8 weeks. Anthropometric and biochemical data, dietary intake details, defecation frequency, the Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptom Questionnaire (PAC-SYM), and the Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAC-QOL) questionnaires were assessed before and after the study in both groups. RESULTS: The IMO 90 group needed significantly lower dose of laxatives after use of IMO 90. The PAC-SYM and PAC-QOL questionnaires revealed significant improvements in constipation-related symptoms and quality of life in the study group. CONCLUSION: Oral IMO administration is a useful adjunct to improve constipation in PD patients.
