English Abstract

By exploring the romantic relationship between ICQ users who are strangers in physical reality, this study reveals how virtual reality affects interpersonal communication. Results show that in the context of virtual reality, romantic relationship presents different characteristics at different developmental stages. In the beginning, due to features of ICQ, relationships are greatly advanced through models or ” care-move,” ”imagine-love” and ”flirt-attract,” whose effects vary according to users' attributes; as relationships move forward, although telepresence, nonmediation and self-disclosure are beneficial for relationship liberation, information distortion including intentionally cheating, information self-control or selection, and inconsistent personalities, as well as users’ joking attitudes toward ICQ, may asily lead to relationship loss; when relationships migrate from virtual space to physical environment, the possibility of relationship loss may be enhanced by high degree of illusion and expectation or low degree of familiarity with each other. The strategies of relationship disengagement are simpler and easier than in physical reality. In addition, some traits of virtual reality that may benefit individuals can, on the contrary, weaken further communication between physical strangers, and lead to final loss of the relationship. High frequency of such phenomena will decrease one's trust on developing new relationships in virtual space. The author thus suggests that ICQ might be more useful in increasing intimacy between acquaintances.
