Since last decade, the Malaysian government has been intervening the freedom of the press. The young media activists of Malaysia have been striving against the authorities. Coming from different educational background, the activists who once studied in Taiwan are discussed in this paper, because they are influenced by Taiwan's democratic atmosphere in the school stage. Most past studies on Malaysia media movement discuss the events of media movement alone, thus neglect the role of the activists in the movement. This paper analyzes the life experience of the activists by applying life history method, and focuses especially on their student life in Taiwan. By doing so, this paper examines the relation between some activists' student lives in Taiwan and their perspective on freedom of the press. In addition, this paper also shows how these activists participate in media reform movements in Malaysia. This paper finds that the activists have become familiar with the idea of media freedom when they stayed in Taiwan as a student. This experience has a critical impact on their future plan and leads them to be a media reform activist back in Malaysia. It also influences the strategy they develop for the movement.
