The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of wood used for book-cabinet on the surface color of papers. Several different woody materials including Taiwan incense-cedar, Taiwan yellow cypress, Taiwan red cypress, Taiwan hemlock and particleboard have been investigated. The changes in surface color of papers stored with different woody materials are compared based upon the variations of brightness retention, color difference and yellowness index. The results obtained demonstrate that Taiwan incense-cedar, Taiwan yellow cypress and Taiwan red cypress cause the yellowing on paper surface. The yellowing tendency induced by woods in decreasing order is: Taiwan incense-cedar>Taiwan yellow cypress>Taiwan red cypress.
