Clear coating is one of the appropriate methods to protect woody materials. Clear coated wood was susceptible to discoloration after light irradiation. To study the effect of pretreatment on the lightfastness of clear coated wood, wood specimens were pretreated with light stabilizers and polyethylene glycol (PEG), respectively, and followed by coating with clear coatings containing Tinuvin-1130 and Tinuvin-123 light stabilizers. The experimental results indicated it couldn't effectively inhibit the photoyellowing of the light -colored wood such as Western hemlock and China fir by coating with clear coatings containing the light stabilizers. Pretreating six wood species with UV absorber and hindered amine light stabilizer could effectually inhibit the discoloration induced by light with the exception of hard maple. The brightness of the dark-colored wood such as Japanese fir and red lauan pretreated with PEG and then coated with clear coating containing light stabilizer would increase after the lightfastness test. It was plausible that, after absorbing the UV light, hydroperoxides induced on the PEG-treated wood surfaces reacted with both the precursors of photoyellowing products and color materials of wood, thereby resulting in photobleaching. The variations in the diffuse reflectance spectra of the coated light-colored wood pretreated with PEG were slightly detected after the lightfastness test. It revealed that pretreatment with PEG could more effectively inhibit the photoyellowing of coated wood.
