U.S.-China Ambassadorial talks during the Cold War were characterized by hostile, irreconcilable negotiations. Since the 1970s, the American perception of Beijing's negotiation behavior has changed significantly. Although having grown more complex over half a century, the PRC's style of diplomacy still retains essential negotiating characteristics. This paper attempts to provide a picture of Beijing negotiating style by evaluating (1) important negotiations on Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and (2) the PRC's behavior prior to negotiation, during the negotiation process, and after reaching an agreement.
