Battle over Bodies: The Prevention and Cure of Schistosomiasis in Jiangnan during the Late 1950's- The Case of Qingpu County

摘要

1950年代後期以青浦縣為代表的江南地區的血吸蟲病防治運動，因政府過高的政治要求，逐漸偏離了理性的軌道，演變為一場全民參與的政治運動。在這一運動中，由於片面追求血吸蟲病防治任務的高速度完成，醫學領域不斷進行「技術創新」，但實際上卻成為一場醫學「冒險」，療程一再縮短，患者因毒性反應面臨的風險也一再增加。同時，生產和治療也發生衝突，部份群眾開始消極抵制這項運動，這就直接影響了政府政治目標的實現，而基於相關利益因素的考量，地方醫務人員和生產隊也不可避免地牽涉到圍繞着血吸蟲患者身體的爭奪戰中來。

Using Qingpu county in Shanghai as a case study, this paper shows how in the late 1950s, political issues turned prevention and cure of schistosomiasis in Jiangnan into a highly politicized campaign in which the entire population participated. The demand to complete the political mission in the shortest possible time led to constant ＂technical innovation＂ in the medical field, but this innovation was highly risky. As the course of medical treatment was shortened repeatedly, the danger to patients due to side effects grew increasingly severe. At the same time, conflicts arose between the campaign and the needs of agricultural production, leading to some passive resistance. This directly affected the realization of the government's political goals and the result was a battle over the bodies of patients. Local medical personnel and production teams could not avoid being drawn into this battle.
