Purpose: To investigate the relationships between indicators of body composition [waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body fat, and body mass index (BMI)] and blood lipid markers [triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)] in middle age women. Methods: Thirty-six females (age: 44.4±9.9 yr) participated in this study. Fasting blood samples were taken to determine the concentrations of blood lipids. Atherosclerosis index (AI) was calculated. BMI, WHR, and body fat were also measured. The data was analyzed by Pearson's correlation. All subjects were divided into two groups by greater or lower the median of WHR (0.79). The differences of blood lipid markers between groups were compared by independent t test. Results: All of the body composition indicators significantly correlated with HDL-C and AI levels (p<.05), but not with TC and LDL-C levels. WHR also significantly correlated with TG level (p<.05), but the waist circumference, BMI, and body fat did not correlate with TG level. Plasma HDL-C, TG, and AI levels were significantly different between high-WHR and low-WHR groups (p<.05), but TC and LDL-C levels were not. Conclusion: WHR was the only indicator of body composition which positive correlated with plasma TG level.
