Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a cluster of metabolic disorders that occur together in one person. They include elevated blood pressure, glucose intolerance, atherogenic dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity. Metabolic syndrome is also called insulin resistance syndrome. The dominant underlying pathophysiology for this syndrome is insulin resistance. The emergence of metabolic syndrome is related to (1) aging (2) lifestyle (diet & physical activity) (3) genetic factors. Obesity and physical inactivity are important potential risk factors. People with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for development of cardiovascular disease (CHD, stroke or PVD) and type 2 diabetes.
