This paper presents a capillaroscopic system that uses a fiber optic probe to allow a direct view and video image capture of periodontal pocket and gingival crevice microvasculature in vivo. The core of the system is a coherent fiber optic imagefibre 950 micrometers in diameter with an imagecircle of 790 micrometers and 30,000 pixel picture elements. Illumination is provided by a green 520nm light emitting diode shone through the periodontal tissues to illuminate the microvasculature within the periodontal pocket. The imagefibre is inserted into the periodontal pocket or gingival sulcus and the light is shone onto the fixed gingiva adjacent to the periodontal pocket under investigation. The image is magnified and captured on a CCD video camera. The system has been used to obtain video images of the periodontal pocket wall microvasculature in vivo.
