Overweight and obesity are highly prevalent in psychiatric patients. The prevalence of obesity was 16.4% among inpatients with schizophrenia in Taiwan. Through appropriate weight-control programs, patients can develop healthy behaviors to resolve obesity effectively. 46.2% of psychiatric patients are obese in our hospital. The reasons for overweight and obesity were lack of dietetic knowledge, exercise, monitoring of weight changes, incentive programs and provision of low-calorie meals. To help patients control their body weight, a weight-control team was formed. This project, performed between 1 April 2011 and 30 September 2011, comprised six weight-control programs: (1) distributing "Fitness and Blissfulness" handbooks; (2) delivering dietetic courses; (3) offering exercise classes; (4) maintaining diet and exercise diaries; (5) implementing incentive programs; and (6) providing low-calorie meals. After these programs were implemented, the participants' average BMI decreased from 30.1 to 28.7 kg/m^2, and the average weight decreased from 80.2 to 77.3 kg, indicating that this intervention project was effective in weight control.
