In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, nations worldwide have increasingly recognized the significance of healthcare professionals and placed greater emphasis on talent cultivation within the field. Taking optometrists as a case study, since the implementation of the Optometrists Act in 2016, they have officially been classified as Category 15 healthcare professionals by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, highlighting the importance of their professional attributes. To ensure adherence to professional standards, enhance professional quality, foster continuous improvement, and establish guidelines for work and decision-making, Taiwanese universities and colleges have placed significant emphasis on cultivating professional ethics. This effort aims to equip students with the necessary ethical knowledge and shape positive professional behaviors before they enter the workforce. This study focuses on students and investigates the relationships among professional ethics, self-efficacy, and career identity. A total of 202 student responses were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and regression statistical methods. The findings indicate that professional ethics positively influence self-efficacy and career identity. Additionally, self-efficacy positively impacts career identity, and it mediates the relationship between professional ethics and career identity. The results of this study provide insights for future academic research on the interplay between professional ethics, self-efficacy, and career identity among optometry students in Taiwan. Furthermore, they offer guidance for the development of professional ethics education, career planning, and continuing education for optometry programs in Taiwanese universities and colleges.
