Reading and Translating Stream of Consciousness in Ulysses

摘要

本文討論重點在於分析喬伊斯在《尤利西斯》一書中所應用的各類意識流與獨白技巧如何干擾閱讀並增加翻譯難度。文中以《尤利西斯》文本片段為例，詳細分析喬伊斯如何靈活應用其意識表現技巧來展現小說中人物與敘述者的內心世界，包括他混用搭配三種表現模式，即心理敘述（psycho-narration）、引述獨白（quoted monologue）和敘述獨白（narrated monologue）等所引起之視角轉換。透過分析與比較兩中譯本，本文更進一步分析意識表現技巧如何影響閱讀並探討蕭乾與文傑若和金隄兩隊譯者對原文的詮釋及其所採取的不同翻譯策略。

In ”Ulysses”, James Joyce's well-engineered wordplay using stream of consciousness employs psycho-narration, quoted monologue and narrated monologue techniques individually and in various combinations that forbid easy reading of Ulyssean text owing to the resultant shifts in point of view. In this paper, the confusion and reading difficulties arising from Joyce's use of the said techniques of presenting the transparent minds of his characters are analyzed by juxtaposing excerpts from the original text with the two Chinese versions by Jin Di and the husband-and-wife team of Xiao Qian and Wen Jieruo. Reading and translation difficulties attributed to episodic theme and Joyce's other wordplay techniques are likewise probed through inter-textual comparisons of the two Chinese versions with the original work.
