A great quantity of toxic substances enter the sea, possibly through the stream, as waste products from family, industry, and agriculture. Many of these may be toxic to aquatic life even at low concentrations. Many toxic chemicals are concentrated as they pass through the various stages of the aquatic food chain to such an extent that there are some hazard to eat aquatic foods in certain areas. Therefore, a study on environmental monitoring systems is urgently needed. The purpose of this paper is to report several types of water monitoring systems (marine, stream, and biological monitoring systems) which have been studied in Taiwan. For instance, several marine monitoring programmes in Taiwan such as Keelung-Patoutzu coastal, Keelung and Kaohsiung harbors, and Kin-Shang Nuclear Power Station have been elucidated. The monitoring parameters and the chemical methodologies have been discussed. Finally, a quality standard in stream water and an allowable concentration of toxic and chemical substances in drinking water have been detailed.
