China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) woods cut from a plantation forest were used in this study. The effect of angle of annual ring to compressive direction on transversal compressive deformation was firstly understood. Then the effect of heat and steam treatment on the permanent fixation of compressed wood was investigated. Woods were compressed in the radial direction under different compression sets and heat-treated or steam-treated. Weight loss, recovery of set and bending strength properties of compressed wood were examined afterward. The weight loss of compressed wood increased with increases in treatment temperature, and time. The recovery of set of compressed wood decreased with increases in treatment temperature, and time. The MOR and MOE of compressed wood increased with the increasing compression set. However, heat-treated or steam-treated compressed wood had lower bending strength properties than untreated compressed wood.
