The effects of the types of assemblies and spacing of connecting screws on the bending moment resistance of joints for different wood-based composite panels in the application of the furniture manufacturing were investigated in this study. The results indicated that lumber core plywood members jointed in 64-mm screw spacing with flatwise assembly had better bending moment resistance, 37% higher than those of the weakest assemblies with 128-mm spacing. In the case of the members with edgewise assembly, the specimens assembled in 96-mm screw spacing had the highest bending moment capacity, 2.29 times greater than those of the lowest groups in 32-mm spacing. In the flatwise joints of particleboard members, the average bending moment resistance of joints assembled by using screw spacing among 64~128-mm was 42.8% higher than that assembled in 32-mm spacing. And in the case of edgewise joints, the members assembled with 128-mm screw spacing had the strongest bending moment resistance, 3.77 times greater than those of the weakest group with 32-mm screw spacing. The medium density fiberboard members with flatwise assembly by using 128-mm screw spacing showed the highest in bending moment capacity, 2.31 times greater than those groups assembled with 32-mm spacing, and 3.92 times in the case of edgewise assemblies. In general, the average bending moment capacity of the joints in flatwise assembly was 13.8% of those joints in edgewise assembly for the wood-based composite panels, and may be critical to the structural design for panel type of furniture products.
