Investigation on microbiologically hygienic status of market ice cream was performed during April/May 1987. Three hundred samples were collected from stores in Taipei. Among them, 99 samples were domestic products (17 brands) while 201 samples were imported ones (10 brands). The results showed that 154 samples (51.3%) failed to meet the hygienic requirement. Among them, 45 samples (45.5%) were in domestic category and 109 (54.5%) belonged to imported category. There were 39 samples (13%) beyond the limitation of bacterial count, 150 samples (50%) found to contain coliform bacteria and 4 samples (1.3%) contained E. coli. The above results revealed that bacterial contamination of market ice cream were serious.
