Exploring the Underground Ruins around National Taiwan Museum in Taipei New Park

According to the historic records, a Mazu temple was established at the end of Ching Dynasty in the Taipei New Park, but it was destroyed completely in the 1910's. The site of the Mazu temple might be located in the south of National Taiwan Museum. This paper presents the investigations on the ruins of Mazu temple and other remains by ground penetrating radar (GPR). The surveys were performed by two stages, preliminary and detailed stage. At the preliminary stage, a 200MHz antenna was used to perform the investigation and its penetrating depth was 5m to explore the places of the ruins that might be buried. At the detailed stage, a 400MHz antenna was adopted to get high resolution data at the shallow depth. Series of parallel survey lines at regular intervals of 1m were preformed to obtain 3D strata data. By the results of GPR exploration, a large amount of ruins are buried in the west and southwest of the museum. Many individual remains are also scattered on the other regions in the park.
