The production and use of ornaments have been ubiquitous in human society since the pre-historical era, and unearthed archaeological finds attest to this. Pre-historical ornaments in Taiwan are dated to around the Neolithic Age, with dispositions varying according to regional environment and cultures. However, during the Iron Age there appeared to have been an overall change in the production, most probably connected with the special social interface of that time. The underlying implications of ornaments may also not be restricted to beauty and prevalent style, and greater symbolic meanings could have been attached to them owing to social development. The causes and mechanisms of this change are worth noting. This article assembles some of the data concerning the ornaments unearthed at pre-historical archaeological sites in Taiwan; and through their distribution of space and time, combined with their features, aims to reach an analysis of the types, materials, and meanings of ornaments. Further, this article, being a basic study, stresses the discussions and depiction of overall tendencies and some particulars and details are thus not within the scope of considerations here. Under this tenet, the author hopes further advanced study can be developed.
