The shelling mechanism was designed by modification of manual shelling procedures. First of all, a vertical half cross-section cutting was made at 6 cm site from the tip of bamboo shoots, and the front 12 cm portion of bamboo shoots was then squeezed to make it softer. Longitudinal cutting were made both at upper and lower sites of the bamboo shoot. When the tip of bamboo shoot touched the switch trigger, the tip shell would be rolled at one side. After finishing shelling for one side, the other side of shell would be rotated by the same mechanism. The result of shelling test showed that the bamboo shoots with 3-8 cm in diameter and 40-90 cm in length could be successfully shelled by this shelling machine. About 510.9 kg, 1,222.5 bamboo shoots, could be shelled in 1 hour. The shelling rate was 96%, and injured rate was 3%.
