A Study of Urinary Mercury Levels among the dental professions in Kaohsiung City

The use of amalgam in dentistry may cause mercury contamination to the dental professions. This study is to investigate this possibility from 47 dental clinics in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Morning urine of 47 dentists and 8 assistants and 29 individuals who worked in non-mercury environment were collected. Urinary mercury was determined with atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Type IL-751). Our results indicated that the average mercury concentration (4.61 μg/l) of the 55 dental professions are apparently higher than those of 29 non-dental professions (2.41 μg/l), (t=2.73, p<0.05). Our investigation also suggested two major factors causing mercury contamination in these dental clinics: the improper mixing of amalgam and poor treatment of residual mercury. Although the present results showed the average urinary mercury concentration of our dental professions is lower than that in other countries, recommendations for the correction of the above mentioned two bad factors should be implemented.
