Different Gain-Setting Affects Measurement of Extrahepatic Bile Duct by Real-Time Ultrasound

摘要

Thirty-one persons were examined by means of a Toshiba Sonolayer 22A real-time ultrasound scanner to evaluate the effect of different gain-settings on the measurement of the internal diameter of the common bile duct. The subjects consisted of 15 males and 16 females; 6 with and 25 without evidence(s) of intra- and/or extra-hepatic biliary stones. Their ages ranges from 11 to 65 years old. With a gain-setting of 75 dB, the internal diameter of the extrahepatic duct was 0.56±0.19 cm (mean ± S. D.), while with 95 dB, the dimension was 0.48±0.18 cm. A significant difference existed between the results of the 2 gains (p<0.001, paired t-test). In conclusion, gain-setting is one of the important factors affecting the measurement of the internal diameter of the extrahepatic bile duct during ultrasound examination.
