The Process of Renewal in Goethe's Italienische Reise

本文旨在探討歌德的自傳作品〔義大利之旅〕並非單純的旅遊報導，而是作者對其義大利經歷的自我表達。這本自傳呈現了歌德的自我教育過程，他的古典時期的藝術理念深受此影響，而整個自我教育過程也促使歌德重新確認他的作家身份。首先本文將概述說明歌德視其1786年的義大利之旅為一種逃離，當旅程愈接近羅馬時，其內在更新的感覺愈加強烈，所以他把抵達羅馬的時刻比喻為重生，另外也將探討歌德在整個旅程中的自我教育過程，討論特別著重於歌德對自然的觀察與新的藝術理念的蘊量，最後本文將論述整個義大利經驗對歌德而言具有決定性的影響，因為這趟旅程使他重新回歸對文學作家的認同。

This essay aims to show that Goethe's autobiography Italienische Reise is not a pure travel report, but a self expression of his experiences in Italy. The autobiography presents an educational process which becomes the turning point for Goethe's exclusive idea of Art of the German Classicism. This educational process also helps Goethe reconfirm his identity as a literary writer. At first, the essay will show that the very beginning of the trip to Italy in 1786 is described by Goethe as a flee. As the stations of his travel are closer to Rom, his feeling of renewal becomes stronger. The arrival at Rom is metaphorically called a rebirth. Then the essay will discuss about Goethe's educating himself during his stay in Italy, especially in regard of observing the nature and developing a new idea of Art. Finally, the essay will argue that the whole experiences in Italy are crucial for Goethe due to the fact that he is able to find his identity as a literary writer again after all different kinds of distractions.
