論“譯”之義

摘要

中西文字各自以不同的文字來描述「翻譯」活動，然而翻譯其實是很複雜的行為，因此各種描述的語詞往往僅能表達其中的部份意涵，無法涵蓋「翻譯」二字的全部本質。本文試圖從「翻譯」的詞源開始起步，追本溯源探究「翻譯」一詞在古今中外的意義演變，歸納出翻譯的三種基本意義分別為：「傳寄、遞交」、「陳說、溝通」、「翻轉、改變」，並舉例分析這些意義透露出來的翻譯觀。最後再進一步從後現代的觀點來討論此詞演變至今所呈現的新意涵，可以為「翻譯」再添另一新意：「譯」亦是「異」。

Translation as an act has been described differently in Chinese and Western languages. Most of these descriptions could express only part of its significance and no single word or phrase can cover all possible meanings, because translating is actually a very complicated activity. This study starts from etymology, trying to explore the origin of the term ”translate.” Through the exploration, three basic meanings are concluded as ”carry across,” ”speak across,” and ”change.” Some examples are provided and analyzed as evidences of the concepts lying behind these meanings. Finally, from the postmodern point of view, this term has been added a new meaning: to translate is also to differ.
