The Role of Different Portions of Lower Brain Stem of the Cat in the Central Cardiovascular Control Mechanism

The functional relationship between different portions of the lower brain stem in reference to the pressor, cardioaugmentor, and cardioaccelertor responses resulting from electrical activation was studied on 42 vagotomized, midcollicular decerbrate, open-chest cats. Complete longitudinal division of the right and left dorsal portions and complete longitudinal bisection of the lower brainstem affected the basal vasomotor and cardiac conditions and their responses insignificantly. Ablation of the ipsilateral dorsal portion diminished the basal cardiovascular conditions and their responses markedly and significantly on stimulation of the ventral and ventrolateral portion, while ablation of the contralateral dorsal portion failed to diminish the same responses significantly. These observations support the previous finding that the central cardiovascular control mechanism resides in the dorsal portion of the lower brain stem. Furthermore, the dorsal portion of the one side functions essentially independently from that of the other, and the fibers of various portion of the lower brain stem responsible for central cardiovascular control mechanism descends predominantly homolaterally.
