Some Interesting Derivations from Quantitative Studies of Intestinal Elements of the Dog

Quantitative studies were made of the elements of dog's intestine, viz., the longitudinal and circular muscle and the mucosa with submucosa. From the width, length, weight, specific gravity, amount of water and fat and concentration of collagen and elastin of appropriate samples, the thickness, the specific gravity of the mucosa with submucosa less muscularis mucosae, fat-free specific gravity, water content, fat% distribution, fat-free water content, variation in concentration of collagen and elastin in practically every element of the intestine at different levels were derived. While variation of water, fat, collagen and elastin along the intestine gave support to a previous finding in which the non-segmental gradient conception in structure was suggested, the fluctuation of fat concentration disturbed not only the water distribution, perhaps also the other chemical compositions. Difference in thickness of the different elements leads to the finding that each element of equal weight and width does not cover the same length of the intestine. Other pertinent points were discussed.
