Effect of Some Vitamins on Resistance to Hypoxia in Mice

Y. F. Kuo and H. S. Fang. Effect of some vitamins on resistance to hypoxia in mice. Chinese J.Physiol.,20(1):79-82,1967.-The effect of some vitamins was studied on the hypoxic tolerance in mice. Essentially altitude convulsion threshold was taken for determining the resistance to hypoxia. It was found that riboflavin, ascorbic acid and niacin had no anti-hypoxic effect. Niacinamide caused a significant decrease in altitude convulsion threshold. Mice treated with niacinamide did not convulse until they had reached a barometric pressure of 128 mm-Hg(simulated altitude of 42,000 feet),while untreated controls went into convulsion at an average pressure of 142mm-Hg(39,800 feet). The possible mechanism of such an increase in hypoxic tolerance was discussed.
