Caloric Compensation in Adult Rats with Dorsomedial Hypothalamic Lesions

Ingestive compensation to additional calories was studied in adult rats bearing bilateral lesions in the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus. Each animal was equipped a transperitoneal gastric fistula to facilitate intubation of a vegetable oil. It was found that animals of the intact control, target missed, and dorsomedially lesioned groups all reduced oral food intake during the period of fat intubation but the compensation was only partial and was not significantly different among groups. The dorsomedial lesions caused significant hypodipsia but not hypophagia in this small sample.
