This experiment was conducted in 1953-1954 in Taipei, Fomosa. The kinds of seeds for test were radish (var.: Cherry) oriental pickling melon (var.: Taiwen Native) cauliflower (var.: Taiwn Native.) turnip (var.: Tien-wen-ceic)、spinach (var.: Taiwan Native)、tomato (var.: Pritchard)、cabbage (var.: Sun-Chi-Chung-Shen and Taiwan Native) and carrot (var.: Denvers) all after a period of 2-3 years of storage. The chemicals were sulphuric acid (conc,: e 0.0005N, 0.005N, 0.05N, 0.5N,)、 hydroch1or ic acid (conc.: 0.0005N, 0.005N, 0.05N, 0.5N,)、indoleactic acid (conc.:0.00000001%, 0.0000001%, 0.000001%, 0.00001%, 0.0001%, 0.001%, 0.01% 0.1%,)、naphthaleneacetic acid (conc.: 0.00000001%, 0.0000001%, 0.00000l%, 0.00001%, 0.0001%, 0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%,)、2,4-D(conc.: 0.000001%, 0.00001%, 0.0001%. 0.00l%. 0.01%,)、uspulun (conc.: 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.1%, 0.2%)、semesan (dust conc.: 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%,) granosan (conc.: 0.01%, .0.02%, 0.1%, 0.2%, dust conc.: 0.5%, 0.1%, ,0.02%, 0.4%,), arasan (conc.: 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.1%, 0.2%, dust conc.: 0.05%; 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%,) gianosan (cone.: 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.1%, 0.2%,) thiou rea (conc.: 0.1%, 0.3%, 05%, 0.7%,) ethylene chlorohydrin (conc.: 1%, 10%, 20%, 30%.) alcohol (conc.: 0.02%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%,) and sodium hydrozide (conc.: 0.0005N, 0,0DSN, 0.05N, 0.5N.). The germinators were made of tin plate (40×52×10 cm) and filled with sandy subsoil. The results may. be summarized as follows: 1. Sulphrnic acid showed significant increase in percentage of germination of turnip with the effective concentrations of 0.0005N, in 2, 5, 8, hours of soaking; while higher conentrations of 0.05N and 0.5N caused inhibition of germination, as showed in above figure 1. The low concentration of 0.0005N also promoted the percentage of germination of oriental pickling melon, as showed in above figure 2. 2. Hydrochloric acid caused good effect on percentage of germination of turnip and oriental pickling melon as sulphuric acid which showed in above figure 3 and figure 4. 3. Indoleacetic acid increased the percentage of germination of turnip with the most effective concentration of 0.01% in 5 hours shoaking. Various concentrations between 0.00000001% to 0.00001% increased the initial, rate of germination of oriental pickling melon, as showed in above figure 5 and table 5. 4, Naphthaleneacetic acid showed neiher harmful nor stimulatory effects on several kinds of vegetable seeds. 5. 2,4-D showed significant increased in percentage of germination of turnip, and also increased the initial rate of germihation, as showed in above figure 6 and table 8. 6. Ethylene cholrohydrin showed showed no effect with the concentration of 1% on the germination of cabbage and oriental pickling melon. High concentration of 10%, 20% and 30% caused inhibition of germination. 7. Uspulun, semesan; granosan; arasan, gianosan, thiourea, alcohol and sodium hydrozide showed no appreciaole difference from controls. 8. Other seeds as spinach, cauliflower, tomato, cabbage and carrot treated with above chemicals of various concentratrations showed no appreciable differenes of effect from qontrols.
