Tainan-White (TNW) is a native maize population which has been cultivated for over 80 years in Taiwan. TNW has been conventionally ultilized as a green corn. Eight Tainan-White populations collected from Pingtung, Taitung, Tainan, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Hualien and Taoyuan areas were planted at Wufeng in fall of 1994. The results showed significant differences in many agronomic characters among the eight TNW maize populations and large variation also existed among different populations. The vegetative characters (plant height, ear leaf length and leaf area per plant) of TNW populations collected from Taitung and Pingtung were higher than those of populations from the Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and the populations of Hualien and Taoyuan have the lowest plant height and leaf area per plant. The results indicated that the temperature of different areas maybe a main factor for the differentiation of the TNW maize populations.
