This paper elucidates the effect of ventral fin clipping on the black seabream based on a sample of 200 fish with the commencement of study on June24,1988.The sample was divided into four equal groups, namely, fish withboth ventral fins clipped, fish with only right ventral fin clipped, fish withonly left ventral fin clipped, and the control group. The effects of fin-clippingon the fish were judged by examining indications of regeneration of clippedfins, change of fin ray counts of regenerated fins, and presence of twistedand shortened regenerated fins. The results showed that 65% of the fin-clipped fish were discernible after 300 days of clipping when fin regenerationrate was less than 90%.However,if the indicator of discernibleness includedabnormal regenerated ventral fin which is lack of fin rays, with the fin twistedand shortened, then the discernible rates for the group with only right ventralfin clipped and the group with both ventral fins clipped were 85.7% and 100%,respectively,after 231 days of clipping.Growth rate of the regenerated ventral fin of the fish with both fins clippedwas significantly lower than that of the fish with only one fin clipped.Thedifference of body growth rate between the fish with both ventral fins clippedand the control group was not significant. However, the body growth rate ofthe fish with only right ventral fin clipped was slower than that of the fishwith both ventral fins clipped and that of the control group. The resultssuggest that single-sided fin clipping might have affected balance in swimmingactivity and subsequently, the feeding activity, resulting in a slow body growthof the fish.
