In the past two decades, tethering techniques have been commonly used to investigatethe copepod behavior. The objective of this study is to evaluate the action patternson the copepod behavior using a tethering technique.By using a collimated laser beam forillumination and video optical systems for viewing(Hwang 1991),the action patterns ofcopepods were examined.Three calanoid copepods of the species Centropages hamatuswere observed during periods of calm and turbulent water motion.Four action patternswere distinguished over the time of the experiments. The results show low variability inbehavior between two animals and previously studied C.hamatus.However,one animalwhich had a faulty tether, shows different time allocations of its action patterns.Such adifference in behavior is a powerful criterion to judge whether an animal has beendamaged during tethering. The relative merits of observing tethered animals versus free-swimming ones is discussed.
