The Inhibitory Effect of Anti-cancer Compounds Extracted from Marine Microalgae on the Growth of Cancer Cells

Four species of marine microalgae, Isochrysis aff. galbana, Nannochloropsis oculata, Cheatoceros muelleri and Tetraselmis chui, common utilized in aquaculture were used as materials. The anti-cancer compounds of marine microalgae were extracted by Tris buffer, 27% ethanol, and 62% ethanol. The inhibitory abilities of anticancer compounds in Tris extract, 27% ethanol extract, and 62% ethanol extract on the growth of colon cancer (SW 480 and HT 29 cell lines) and gastric cancer (TMC-1 and TSGH9201 cell lines) were determined by MTT assays. The inhibitory ability of anti-cancer compounds extracted from I. aff. galbana on the growth of TMC-1 was found to be the strongest. Anti-cancer compounds of I. aff. galbana in Tris extract, 27% ethanol extract, and 62% ethanol extract had strong inhibition on the growth of these cell lines. The molecular size of anticancer compounds in Tris extract was found to be smaller than that of blue dextran after they were separated by Sephacryl S-200 column. Active fractions from Sephacryl S-200 column were collected and further separated by DEAE-Sepharose column. Active fractions were eluted by 0.25~0.5 M NaCl. Therefore, anti-cancer compounds should carry much negative charges. The further investigation on the study of characteristics of these compounds is needed.
